The Central Palm Beach County Chamber of Commerce is holding our annual Taste 2013 Event and Chocolate Lovers' Festival at the South Florida EXPO Center on June 6th. This event has member restaurants and caterers offering tasty food, craft beer and wine samples along with mouthwatering chocolate desserts. There will also be various business exhibitors displaying their products and services and giving out amazing prizes to attendees.

Florida Job Market 2013

Some figures show Florida is better economically than the rest of the nation, but it can be deceiving. The unemployment rate has fallen 1.4 % in the last year in Florida and 250,000 jobs have been added. The growth has been seen primarily in the Florida Keys and in Central Florida. Although Florida has shown three years of consecutive job growth, according to economists, we still have 7 percent fewer jobs in Florida today than we did before the recession, and unemployment stands at 7.4 percent, leaving a gap of about 600,000 jobs that we hope will bloom in the Sunshine State soon.

The job market has mainly expanded in the entertainment industry; inclusive of restaurants, hotels and tourist attractions. This area has netted 40,500 new jobs over the past year. The Service sector has grown the most and even construction is coming back with a 3.2 % rise in growth. Other areas of growth are transportation, trade and warehousing. Private employment has risen 2.3 percent. The only areas still suffering are publishing and government jobs, but thankfully these are being offset by the increases in the tech sectors of employment. Unfortunately the types of jobs being added to the employment market are jobs that pay low wages. Not only are there still less jobs, but the wages do not compare to those before the recession.

SoBe: South Beach, then and now.

There was a time when there was no SoBe, or rather the abbreviation of South Beach. This is the same location we now know as a being a hot bed of fun, party and romance, located in the south end of Miami Beach, Florida. In the 1980s, South Beach had nothing more than run down hotels, old retired people, and some nasty crime. Transients would live on the beach unnoticed, and the population in Miami cared little for the area.

Instead, Biscayne Bay was more alluring to the locals. We then saw the development of South Beach in the mid 1980s. The plan was to return the area back to its glory days of the roaring '20s in Miami Beach, Florid; with Art Deco Design and waterfront beach improvements. The developers dove in from all parts of the world, and the real estate began to boom. One of the best calls was made by the early commissioners who limited the height of buildings along the ocean way.

The part that drew the younger crowd was the beach. The city added swings and play areas for families. They added pull up bars, creating a “muscle beach” area. South Beach then started giving “permits” for the ocean beaches to be used for events. They made sure that there was very limited beach erosion as well. When planned well a city will flourish, and SoBe did just that.

Today Miami Beach and it’s SoBe streets are filled with cafes, restaurants, shops, and just about anything a tourist or local would need to enjoy fun and entertainment. The swaying palm trees that line Ocean Beach Drive are alluring. You have the freedom to go topless on the beach if you wish. When it comes to commerce, Florida can be very liberal. The well blend of locals migrating from all parts of the world, with different languages and customs, also makes a trip to Sobe an experience to remember. I find myself often saying, “Thank God I live in Florida!” Here is a list of MUST See in SOBE !

Mango's Cafe - Scantly dressed dancers made up of the hostess' and bartenders. They entertain the guests with unique Caribbean and Brazilian dances. These tropically dressed entertainers make Mango's a must see. Mango's is also an excellent restaurant serving Caribbean and Spanish food. There is also live entertainment and you will definitely enjoy the mix of tourists and locals.

Nikki Beach - One of the first establishment in the early years of South Beach. This club was once called Penrods, but now it included it all. Enjoy the beach, right on the sand on a white canopy bed, or choose one of the tee pees or lawn chairs. The music comes from inside to out, with multiple dancing areas, and special promotional events. Their food is excellent as well, but I suggest not missing their party filled Sunday brunch!

The Clevelander - Classic South Beach! This is one of the oldest surviving bars in South Beach. Still looks pretty much the same with some great improvements. Classic bar food and great bands. Right in the middle of the restaurant club is a pool, don't fall in!
